Revitalising Higher Education

Puna Aurei / LearnFest is an annual teaching and learning symposium hosted by Te Puna Ako - Centre for Tertiary Teaching & Learning at Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato / The University of Waikato in Hamilton, Aotearoa New Zealand. This event, since its inception in 2016, has evolved from a local face-to-face gathering to a global online forum, particularly during the Covid pandemic. The 2022 edition, hosted online in partnership with Cardiff University (UK) as the world emerged from the Covid pandemic, had the theme of ‘Revitalisation’. This acknowledged the broad spectrum of rejuvenation underway in higher education, whether institutionally, within discipline-specific teaching, or regarding individual practice. This volume, the first of its kind from LearnFest, is timely, as it reflects on the profound disruptions caused by the global pandemic across educational landscapes. Although the final outcome of these changes is still unknown, it is clear that the dynamics of teaching and learning have shifted dramatically.

Transport accessibility and road network load in Poland when faced with flood hazards

The monograph contains the results of research devoted to determining the vulnerability of passenger road transport in Poland by identifying the nature and scale of changes in transport accessibility and changes in the network traffic load in the event of a flood (with different probabilities of occurrence), conducted under the project number 2018/29/B/HS4/01020, financed by the National Science Center in Poland. In the course of the implementation of such formulated main goal of the study, an attempt was made to achieve a group of specific objectives of a cognitive, methodological and application character. The research was conducted mainly on the basis of data on the extent of flood risk areas in Poland and their development, as well as the road network and the development of its neighborhood. The publication may be of interest to researchers dealing with the geography of transport or – more broadly – with socio-economic geography and spatial management. It can also be helpful material for students of study programs that relate to the geography of transport, transport accessibility or spatial mobility in their curriculum. The content of the thesis covers issues that can be used by specialists in crisis management or road infrastructure management in crisis situations related to the occurrence of a flood.

The Curriculum of Everything: Understanding education and curriculum

“The Curriculum of Everything advances as the eternal future in which artificial intelligence surpasses the human capacity to do but not that of understanding and feeling.” Now even the “father” of Artificial Intelligence worries even those bedrocks of being – understanding and feeling - may be at risk. Pacheco reminds us that “curriculum study is a normative question,” now necessarily “with its technological dimension.” Then in a stunningly synoptic sentence that students could usefully study all semester, he summarizes: “the curriculum as a socially, culturally, ideologically, politically and economically constructed practice, is a formal and informal dispositive of interwoven relationships between knowledge, power, and technology.” (…) Penetrated, we become impregnated with the structures of software, as Pacheco appreciates: “Technological devices are powerful instruments of subjectivity production, moving the subject into predefined ways of knowing (…) Old-fashioned rhetoric alright, but insightfully implying we need to return to the past, when were still – sort of – human, before we were seduced by supranational “citizenship” in the software state, before we became submerged in the “curriculum of everything.” Step back from the brink.
